The Louis Chachere and M. Catherine Dumond are the progenitors of all the Southwest Louisiana Chachere descendants. Only two boys are known born to this couple from France, Charles, b. 1755, and Louis Dominique Chachere, 1760-1827. Very little is known about Charles, but Louis D. Chachere married Catherine Vouchere in 1786. Many well-known Chachere names follow this couple’s offspring.
Families part of this great legendary family include Martel, Boutte, Pierrottie, Sittig, and many more.
The 2023 Chachere family book totals 682 pages. It includes 12 generations and has 615 pages of family history, obituaries, and family stories and inline photos. There are also 23 pages of family pictures. Along with the presentation of family history and family details, there are more than 750 “inline” photos. The inline photo means the person in the book is reported on with his family and includes an adjacent photo.
African American families include the descendants of Jules/John Chachere and his wife Louisiana Gibson. Jules Chachere is the child of Julien L. Chachere and Clarisse. In the 1910 and 1920 Federal Census, Jules/John and wife Louisiana’s Race is Black while they are identified as Mulatto in the 1920 Census.
Another African American family is the children of Beaurepaire P. Chachere and Celeste Chenier. Four children, Celeste, Louis, Ernest, and Felix Chachere were all born from 1830 to 1850. Louis Chachere and is wife Leontine Collins are identified as Mulatto in the 1880 Federal Census.
Judge Barthelemy Amede Martel’s relationship with Clarisse Lemelle resulted in the birth of Theophile Martel in about 1838. Theophile Martel married Alexandrine O. Estorge. Both Theophile and Alexandrine are identified as Mulatto in the 1880 Federal Census. Judge Martel, 1819-1887, had a child with his wife Catherine E. Chachere and with Emma Boutte.
